Secret Garden ~ Brent Harris
I. The Most Addictive Drug
What is, do you think, the most addictive drug
If I suggest possibilities, you may nod or shrug
It is neither heroine nor is it prevalent nicotine
It’s something that makes us act more obscene
What, you say? You believe it is crack cocaine
By comparison to this, we would easily abstain
It is neither ups nor downs, not even sideways
It will corrupt you on your worst and best days
Not drink or food, without, we would survive
Addicts need daily doses, or do not feel alive
It is not a drug, though you may find it funny
I will tell you, it’s not even big piles of money
Money could buy it, but it’s not sex, how silly
Nor is it violence, either planned or willy-nilly
And you’ll crave it by the week, day, and hour
Since the most addictive drug of all is power
II. Want Versus Need
A need for power will make you sell your soul
It does not matter if base or lofty was your goal
It will flow through your veins, turn blood cold
A wanton succubus to turn heads young or old
The powerful are lost, not by lifestyle, schemes
By the crushing loss of truth, hopes and dreams
Then, no mere mundane drug, money, murder
May ever restore your misplaced sense of order
If you’ve never known power, life may be tough
You’ll want what others have, turn mean, gruff
Until you gain wisdom, enough is all you need
Then no drug tempts, from your path misleads
Share this truth with all and everywhere you can
Because I worry power is a drug we cannot ban
Yet, if we all decide we must, we may limit it a bit
So, if anyone wants power, they must not have it
III. What Will Our End Be?
You and I will never know how this all comes out
Unless we return from our future, which I doubt
Though I will be gone, I believe we will never last
Whether we go out with a weak whimper or blast
Prove me wrong, I dare you, but I know won’t lose
So far we have shown the distinct inability to choose
Because all, everyone are connected now, worldwide
Oceans are no barrier; unmet friends the other side
Voices of the world’s peoples must join together now
We may not agree, but perhaps we will find out how
Have an honest dialog; learn we are not so far apart
Though this may not be the solution, it will be a start
If we refuse to follow, like lambs unto the slaughter
A better world may greet each future son or daughter
Yet callous disregard from our past will leave a scar
In time, though, we might put an end to hunger, war
IV. #Demand Intervention
Power will not be easily surrendered, it’s such a curse
Until we somehow curtail it, our lives will grow worse
Not many with power or without, see we’re the brink
While some realize we are much closer than we think
Those people addicted to their power can never care
They cannot confess they are the reason we are here
They strive, do their utmost, to believe they’re kings
Making sure they’re the ones with all the toys, things
Like every addict, they will harm themselves, others
Their need so aggressive, sense and sanity it smothers
It is time for all the rest of us to demand intervention
For all to survive, thrive, we must institute prevention
Though you may think me a fool, we must never comply
To any thought, word, order which injures us; it is a lie
We must call for a moratorium, for a day, a week, a year
And let no religion, cult or power, cause us doubt or fear
