When you live in chronic pain, no one wants to share
You hide it as well as you can, but at times, you swear
Those who love you are sympathetic, but cannot know
How every day you must struggle to get up, let alone go
Still, for the most part we try and smile and try to smile
We fool everyone some, even ourselves for a little while
In those sacred moments, we’re good, right, who we are
We know it cannot last, our body, our life raises the bar
I see it’s a beautiful day outside; I will go out and live it
And, I will smile at every passing stranger and mean it
They may smile too, despite pain, no matter the season
Say something nice to someone, for no apparent reason
