Performance, Like Life

                                                                                    Too Like the Lighting ~ Philip Brent Harris

Like life, ready or not, this guitarist
jumps right in without introduction.
Like life, he struggles, even if he has
played before. We all study and play,
learning the myriad songs and parts,
recurring themes, mistakes echoing.
We practice, hoping to grow into our
music, know it in our bones, hearts.
At times, it will overwhelm us, break
our bones, our heart, to conquer us.
When we’ve overcome and moved past
our growing pains, we are given more
difficult challenges, new music which
prods us, pushes us till our rhythms
accelerate, move apace, though we’ll
still stumble, fall and fail, until we go
faster, until our steps are in sync on
whatever spiral of creation we reach.
We will master this as well, though it
may take lifetimes, we begin it again.
Do not be fooled, that the higher we
ascend, the slower a spiral seems to
spin. Life is never the turning of the
screw, but how long it takes us to go
around and transit to a higher plane.
