Along for the Ride

Along for the Ride

Sausage Factory ~ Philip Brent Harris

Peace is Purpose, Nonviolence is Strength,  Diversity is Unity, Empathy is Empowerment

Listening to a long-time friend, nearly 50 years,
who currently lives more than 5,000 miles away,
playing a bamboo flute, somewhere in Chicago.
A mysterious mélange of time and space, relative
to not only distance but also duration, the internet.
My unnamed friend relates stories and facts about
the music, which is or is not, Bach contemporary,
other composers, thoughts which spring to mind.

What do we see through the eyes of distraction?
Is it merely sorrow or seeds of hope, variation?
I try to solve such questions; what’s that mean?
Are they, am I only an empty bell, background
radiation, felt, unseen, always and everywhere?
Temporary bursts of awareness, manifestations,
arising from our ground of being, examples of
the phenomenology of perception, living aware.

Always seeking other ways of seeking meaning,
finding answers, in hope of brief understanding.
Mendel, Fleming, Darwin, Newton, searching
for hints into the workings of our world, more.
Shall I mention, Einstein, Hawking, names lost,
unknown, those who contributed past to future?
Reflected, as well, in art, music, writing, more
All who did and do what has not yet been done.

Seeds scattered, to generate life but also totality.
Life into death into life, into alpha unto omega.
Not for reference to any divinity, but expression
of scale. Two small words conveying vastness,
from big-bang until heat-death of our universe.
So, it might all begin again, rocketing outward,
reinventing stories of lives and deaths unknown.
Whether aware or not, we are along for the ride.

Peace is Purpose, Nonviolence is Strength,  Diversity is Unity, Empathy is Empowerment
