The smell seemed so familiar, so evocative.
Watched Pacific’s waves crash upon shore.
Far from the clifftop, worried it might give.
Still, that odor tickled my nostrils as before.
Yet imagine my surprise, “What?” you ask.
When I realized what tantalized. My mask.
Watched Pacific’s waves crash upon shore.
Ocean’s blue blending sky into the horizon.
It works within me; I seek to find my core,
Recalling it has become harder to find fun.
Still, I am out walking with the lady I love;
Able to step outdoors, breathe and to move
Far from the clifftop, worried it might give.
I’ve lived in California long enough, I know
Despite how it may appear, could be a sieve.
When infinity calls your name, you shall go.
I contemplate the emptiness of vasty space.
That however we run, end in the same place.
Still, that odor tickled my nostrils as before.
I ordered all the nearby scents, quite unsure.
Because I’m without woodcraft or even lore
I detect sand, surf, asphalt, exhaust for sure.
All of those and none of those, specifically.
Never thought that it manifested materially.
Yet imagine my surprise, “What?” you ask.
Seeing blue sky and this day finds me here.
Being alive in the radiance where we bask,
Neither yesterday nor tomorrow need fear.
I must proclaim the glory of the day, night;
If I have not had enough, bag a bigger bite.
When I realized what tantalized. My mask.
In our world of plague, but my daily attire.
I do whatever is needed to remain relaxed,
Sunshine, rain, and in between, till I expire
Soon, I think masks gone, not the madness.
While we learn to love and relish gladness?
