Days of Future Past

Recently, San Francisco joined Pisa in the leaning building club.
Though ours has 58 floors.

Ha, take that, Pisa and your sad old leaning tower.
In new San Francisco, we’re quite as inept as you.
Because our sinking skyscraper gives us the power.
As tourists flock to see our travesty. What a view.

Should we write a symphony, opera for this hubris?
Somberly shake our heads, or fingers to tut and tsk?
While we wonder why we ever needed to build this.
Though ours is also sinking, 18” as it’s begun to list.

I wonder what might the new listed price become,
Considering the odd, cracked window on floor 36?
Pay a single dollar; your purchase might be dumb.
Mistake made because we can, are not an easy fix.

Looking ahead, will it still stand tall, be in ruins,
Before Earth becomes an expanding ball of gas?
Shall future archeologists be finding a clue then,
More than we were here and this too must pass?

What fools we mortals be; can’t recall who said it.
May google on my cell phone, won’t matter now.
And all our foolish pride, our fear, aid and abet it.
Haven’t learned fine points of creation, only how.

We must not use all ideas that pop into our head,
Without knowing creation’s married to destruction.
Done, with no good reason, left many of us dead.
Nor would I say this as an attack or obstruction

Well. I just might, not all that’s made is a benefit.
We’re all a giant snafu, mistakes; it’s who we are
And, the time has come to change, more than a bit.
We’ve been here but briefly, haven’t come too far

We advanced more quickly than any of the others,
And, we should examine where that has gotten us.
Would be further along, if I only had my druthers.
Relax, we’re screwed, not too long till we are dust.

Ha, take that, Pisa and your sad old leaning tower.
In new San Francisco, we are quite as inept as you.
Because our sinking skyscraper gives us the power.
As tourists flock to see our travesty. What a view.
