Lift My Lamp Beside the Golden Door

Mother of Exiles

Mother of Exiles ~ Philip Brent Harris

In 1883, Emma Lazarus, daughter of immigrant families, wrote a sonnet entitled “The New Colossus.” You almost certainly know part of it. It’s emblazoned on a plaque which now resides in the museum of the Statue of Liberty. Perhaps, unlike me, you knew the complete verse. I must admit to being surprised when I learned the parts I’d never heard or read before. It became more meaningful to me, especially when I realized that at least 100 plus years on we still understood what made the United States exceptional. You almost certainly know part of it.What we call the Statue of Liberty, Lazarus more aptly named Mother of Exiles. She says, “Send these, the hopeless tempest-tost to me. I lift my lamp beside the golden door.” “The New Colossus.”
