Sacred ~ Philip Brent Harris

In the light of the sunset,
I saw the eyes of truth.
Though they showed the debt
I accrued in youth.

They left me smiling, just the same.

In the glory of the dawn,
I heard the voice of all creation,
saw the raptor and the fawn.
I lived in their reflection,

Laughed at everyone and myself.

In the heat of noon-day sun,
I wilted and wished for what was gone.
Water, life’s essence; the world was dun.
I asked who failed; was I the one?

I cried weak tears of sorrow for the land.

At night, I bathed in starlight’s fire,
slaked my thirst in radiant beauty,
wondered had I done all required
as I fell behind, in pursuit of me.

I turn around, at last, and find myself.
