Begin, Become, Begone

Days of Future Past ~ Philip Brent Harris

Speaking now of old friends
or of lovers from long ago.
Where the closest may be
lost or somehow replaced
by others along the way.

Yet, life continues along,
with us or without us.
Do you believe, perchance,
when you are finally gone
the universe vanishes.

This, despite evidence
to the contrary, science,
perhaps, religion. If there’s
nothing after you’re dead,
then you will be right.

But you are also wrong.
Even without consciousness
you’ll be burned, buried,
left to rot. So in the future you
will become something else.

  1. First of all, don’t tell me that you too are into philosophy.
Philosophy isn’t just a subject, it’s the ultimate truth.
Let’s start with the first part, “the closest may be replaced by others or lost,” this is so true.
I never had a best friend. However, I’ve lost too many special friends & there wasn’t conflict or something like that, it’s how our lives go on.
There’ll be a time when we’ll perish & none of this will matter.
Even still, I have been advised to create my own meaning by so many poeple.
    Future don’t seems so good.
    Truely profound poetry!

  2. Thank you so much. I am indeed into philosophy, although I’m unsure about the ultimate truth. The universe is simply too vast for such certitude, for me. I agree that the future doesn’t seem so good, but to use a cliche, where there’s life, there’s hope. Most became cliches because they have a lot of truth in them. You appear to be a relatively young man, so, please hang in there. you are very talented. A single step, a single word, a single smile may change everything which follows. I do appreciate you response.
