What We Think We Held

People Over Politics, World Over Wealth!

Hidden in Plain Sight ~ Philip Brent Harris

It took nearly as long for sunlight to reach your eye
As it did for George Floyd to be murdered and die.
Even these words you read are already in the past,
although it may be, a mere nanosecond has passed.
Still, a year ago or five minutes we are but a renter.
As both live in a place that we can no longer enter.
What could we do then? A thing we can’t do now?
What has changed? Could we have forgotten how?

I know how to do what I want to do, most any day.
I don’t get it done; I wonder if I have lost my way?
Skills, knowledge gleaned on our path are retained
artifacts from the past, which are all that remained.
Are they proof it existed was true, but how briefly?
Did it favor a petty pace or race by us quite fleetly?
What of our world and our lives since the pandemic
Have we decided what’s whimsy, what’s endemic?

Is there a way to hold on to what we think we held?
Or, have we lost our drive, are no longer propelled?
I would love to discuss your thoughts on the matter,
Whether you think I am sane or as mad as the hatter.
I’ve read the mad often make fantastic realizations.
Am I clutching at straws with such rationalizations?
Is it like the stock market, I’ll regain what I’ve lost?
If that’s proven true, I wonder at what eventual cost?
