I went for a walk this morning.
Reached the beauty of the briny deep.
Upon the surface only was my view;
the world below kept its secrets close.
I thought of how we judge the world,
based on the surfaces we can see
and the prejudice we were taught to know.
Were you taught to hate and to fear?
any who looked different, you could not hear.
You spoke a language of signs and code
They spoke another you were schooled to loathe.
Another accent, but all the same.
Each held some words to survive,
to show the hate or hide the fear of living.
Did you grow up warned to be alert;
taught that your words or nothing
might cause your death or leave you hurt?
Was yours the swagger of the victor
which you learn from zero age?
Given the power you were taught to crave.
The victim cowering, conquered when small.
Perhaps you were granted reprieve
as some children sometimes are.
Played together never noticed you didn’t match.
You kept this, or you lost this as you grew.
If you kept it, count yourself among the lucky few.
