Still he says and still he says

He is not the one,

Not the one they want,

Not the one they need.

In one place

He believes this.

Other places, he knows,

Knows he’s lying

If only to himself.

When she says and when she says

You cannot mean me.

I’m nothing special

But, yes

I can do that.

One time she hopes

They will skip her.

Other times, she believes

She is the one they need.

Despite what we say and despite what we say

We are afraid.

We bluff and bluster

And we pray.

On one day, we pretend

We are brave.

On others, we think

We are just faking it,

No matter what we do or say;

Life goes on

Anyway.
