Ours to Choose

Star Trails to Distant Planets ~ Philip Brent Harris

Mentioned rarely in polite conversation, I follow you around.

Rarely will you see or hear me because I never make a sound.

Unknown the land that I will one day lead you, an adventure.

Oft times I’ll snatch you unprepared, long before you’re sure.

Still, whether slow or sudden, I always choose the correct time

To introduce myself to you, young, old, or even in your prime.

Snug and warm at home, I might choose to steal your crown;

In brightest day I take you, thief in the night, always known.

More patient than you comprehend, no time too long to wait.

You play hard to get;  I will court and win you as sure as fate.

Like any challenge you confront, know you will pass this test.

Slow, intimate or whirlwind romance; I know you will say yes.

Call me shade or shadow, loath to accept I steer you to light.

Inevitable, dub me grim ghoul, resist me with all your might.

Frightened, alone, tie your blindfold, swear I don’t hold sway.

Leading you gently past dark alleys and onto the lighted way.

Boldly, I’ll take you, stride forth; you’d choose to lag behind.

On adventure urge and guide you, yet you pay me no mind.

You run and hide, simply disappearing, no apparent reason,

Watch others explore, thrive or fail, in every passing season.

Boon companion, I’m constant, caring as you seek treasure,

Along for the ride if all you seek is solitude or only pleasure.

I hold on tight, though you push me away, yell, “I hate you.”

I’m taskmaster, teacher, mentor, no matter what may ensue.

Around blind corners push you, so you may find your love.

To the future carry and inspire you, your impetus to move.

I’ walk beside you, hold your hand through sun or sorrow.

I match you step for step, today, until your last tomorrow.

Eyes and ears closed, take your journey, no sight or sound.

Follow the imposed and well-worn patterns, culture bound.

Ask yourself, what you fear more, the darkness or the light.

Sun makes shadows, still, brightly blaze the stars at night.
