Asking Why

They all told me that dying is an honor
when you fall in the cause of freedom.
What of the life that might bring peace,
Words of the poet that might sway us?

When will we know this loss as a horror?
It tells how little of the road we’ve come.
Am I foolish to mourn a future we lease?
Music and art lost, if we yay or we cuss.

The freedom we speak is the right to live
In whatever manner we have chosen so,
If we love who we wish; no one will care.
We live as one race and everyone will try.

Though we might disagree, we must give,
Find the sun’s warmth when we’re frozen.
Give food, water, shelter each here, there
To share without thinking of asking why.
