Hope We’re Still Lucky

                                        City of the Future ~ Philip Brent Harris

~~~~~
What proof do we need of our existence?
Power, now, though it will fade in time.
Our skulls, bones in a museum display;
see an ancient specimen of a lost culture.
Will it be left over from our destruction?
Did we scavenge our garbage, heritage?
As hubris leads us to think we need none,
No insect, animal, plant, in order to live.
Posit an alien culture sifting our midden,
propose theories, how, why we perished.
Realize none of it would matter, except,
If we used it to live longer, more at ease.
But they’ll clearly see we had no interest
in doing anything but moving to our end
as rapidly as possible, though look closer.
We race to stay in one spot, yet lag behind.
I fear a final verdict will be mass insanity,
at least from symptoms I am seeing now:
aim a pistol at our head, spin the chamber,
pull the trigger and hope we’re still lucky.
