Written while listening to music written in the midst of WWI.
How then do I feel so little left of me, in this
biting cold, folded in covers hardly worthy of
being called blankets. Thanks be to all. Will I
survive this brutal winter? This splinter of a
season stabbed into my flesh, with no reason
to believe I’ll ever pluck it out. Fevered and in
pain, I linger, chew on my fingers, malinger. I
know no solution, no positive recitation. Cold,
too weak for revolution. Storm comes in, fills
my basement windows in snow, robs the sun.
Abandons me far below the level of existence.
Nowhere to go, nothing to see, I stir a meager
fire, conspire to pretend I’m warm, as I hope
for the coming spring. Pretend to believe that
a time will come when I will sing again, coax
tiny seeds to life, with my voice of love and
longing. Might I know the fecund messiness of
summer? With no dark specter of war looming
over my place within this, my wondrous world.
No flags here need be unfurled. No bombs, no
bullets. No hatred, no division, a total revision
of lives and faces. Replacing all we have lost.
