When Walter went to the drugstore,
he wasn’t buy drugs, but looking
for relief from his aches and pains.

When Walter went to the supermarket
,he didn’t think of everything that had died,
but shopped to find the healthiest foods.

When Walter went to the movies on Saturday,
he didn’t think how beautiful the actors were,
but became absorbed in the stories as if real.

After Walter met Joyce, he changed his tune
and sang in the shower, though he sang offkey.

After Walter dated Beverly, his eyes opened
and he never again saw a partner in innocence.

After Walter married Katrina, his world grew
and he had children and pets; a whole slew/

After Walter’s children grew older, they fought
and he didn’t understand them or their world.

Before Walter’s children went away, Katrina got sick.
If only he could go back in time for a while/

Before Walter became absorbed in Katrina’s care,
if she felt strong, they still had fun times.

Before Walter went to the drugstore, he asked Katrina
if she had prescriptions she needed today.

Before Walter went to the cemetery, he wondered
if his oldest son would come from back east/
