Quitting Time ~Philip Brent Harris

May I take on the travails
of our small garden of Earth?
No god or saint, I’m simply
willing. Surely I must not be
alone in this, the capacity to
bear the burdens we have
packed and long-shouldered?
Through our hubris and false
belief, misplaced confidence,
we court failure. Not through
my own pride, or foolish belief
I am somehow better, I simply
think I can bear his and should.
If I can remove the daily stress
of hunger, war, and the agony
we spread, as if it will feed,
clothe, and shelter all people.

Such a small group secures the
ease our transgressions have
created. Though it’s such a small
group, one person cannot stop it.
Breathe deeply, put down your
burdens, walk away, and gather
together in sunlight or beneath the
starry pillars of night. Think no
more of what you’ve discarded.
Smile, laugh and hug each other
in unity. No more separation of
bigotry, hate, greed, war, hunger;
gross and petty mistakes that tear
us apart. Then, we may face either
death or life, for they and we sup
at the same feast. While I, and any
who will join me, gather our folly.
