Skip and hop along, happy, storybook people.
Despite how dark the story becomes, someone
will always turn the page. What comes next?
If someone has torn out the final pages, and
used them as fantasy toilet paper—what then?
The story can end at any time. Even when the
threats, challenges are much too hard, undone,
Oh, never mind. The carnival’s come to town.
The barkers call while a happy tune sounds
from a piano. It’s so lively, you want to dance.
Follow the notes to their source. Run quickly.
Wait, there sits but a player piano before a
painted backdrop; water stained and sun
bleached, until you can barely recognize the
happy scene you were meant to perceive.
How sure you were, the big top would carry
you away, dazzle you, and make you gasp
in equal measure. How small though is the
measuring cup which we are offered, most
of us? Smaller than a thimble and empty.
What a gip! When you go to complain, you
find the show has packed up and gone. The
train cars dwindle in the distance. Yet happy
music plays and who are we not to dance?
