~~~~~
How terribly strange to be 70. Paul Simon
Not strange to have reached this lofty age, but
more the wonder of how did I get here.
Riding past the Pacific ocean
without the burden of driving,
I watch the blue of salt water
change color in lingering day.
Clouds float, casting shadow
like a mysterious puppet play
untold tales, mixed emotions.
The ocean this close to winter
holds a fascination unknown,
depths we might never reach.
No different in myriad ways
from the seasons now passed.
My perceptions paint pattern
on the canvas of my memory.
On other sunrises and sunsets
we observe, imagine, reflect
the ocean to the azure dome;
our horizons limned in glory.
Our palette of the break and
ending of day steers thoughts
onto pathways we otherwise
might never consider taking.
Can our thought be epiphany
which resonate dawn to dusk,
and around the wheel again?
Until, every one of us must
stop and engage eye contact.
Smiling, we embrace and talk
through glory we have seen,
decide we must begin again.
