There is no use complaining
I did not start too late, but
being an older white guy is
no longer the thing to be. What
has that to do with anything?
Not much if I stay true to my
vision and my choices; it’s
all that I can really do.
Even if I seek to emulate
any who have gone before,
I follow trails they laid
from their travels to my door.
I began when I started, oh
so many years ago. Listened
to people I should have ignored;
it’s too late now to choose
that avenue of travel.
I made the choices then as now
with only the best I could do.
When I have gotten better, I
have tried to share that with you.
You, whoever you may be.
Someone I meet and speak to
or someone distant from my time.
Perhaps, none will ever notice
and I will have to say that’s fine.
If I can determine how to return
to the misplaced confidence of youth,
I’m sure I will find my truth.
If I look carefully, I know
I have never lost that spark.
I let layers of my life cover it.
Its flame weak, hidden by dark.
Each day I do my best to fan
its sheltered glow into conflagration.
Though it may burn more than bridges
I still seek the sought sensation.
Yet, age has brought some wisdom.
Though I yearn and hope and dream
Life will play out as it will
I will love and laugh, cry and scream.
In the end I will not know
what my life meant until after
I am gone. Wonder what I’ll find
after I have song my final song.
