Over 300,000 years of homo sapiens, us,
Stumbling around, till we got everywhere.
Yet, only 5,000 years of the written word,
So I can struggle to try to speak with you.
At first we wrote on stone, clay, tree bark,
Everything we could find or could claim.
Egyptian papyrus enjoyed by the Romans.
Parchment rendered from the skin of kids.
Oh, what an amazing revolution we made.
In early 2nd century China invented paper.
Later, when it reached the Islamic world,
They produced and used copious amounts.
The paper they made used in the service
Of knowledge, mathematics, astronomy,
Medicine, engineering, agriculture, spread
To places in the world including the West.
Gutenberg came along in the 15th century
With a great idea and an invention funded
By selling off the chief western holy book.
Yet, he stood upon the shoulders of giants.
So much of the world has had a hand in
Communicating across time and distance.
Yet, too bad we haven’t done a better job
Of not only exchange, but of connection.
