We are all walking mysteries.
Those of us who wear masks
And those of us who do not.
We wear masks to protect others
And ourselves, if possible.
I can only guess those who don’t,
Certainly don’t care about me.
In fact, I think they must hate me.

I do not, cannot figure out why.
I don’t hate them or want them
To suffer. I believe in love and hope.
I believe in the impossible, know,
That despite our evolution, history,
Ages past and ages yet to come,
That we can change, have changed
And will continue to change and grow.

Those in the world who seek power
Have power, seduced but its dubious
Charms. Grief and hatred chief
Among them as well as greed, poverty
Of flesh and of spirit, loss and disease,
Courting all the ills of the world.
They’ll always be at war, with themselves.

They will force those who would not
Fight to attack or defend lives snatched
Away. Disappearing as all life does
In order to measure time and love.
Though they are opposites, in a sense.
Time piles into ever greater drifts.
Yet, when we inhabit dark days
Of despair, we realize we must
Seek, find, and cherish love
Which we gain by giving it away.
