Dark as Distance

Wild Ride ~ Philip Brent Harris
~~~~~
Softly now, we whisper, walk along a winding clifftop path.
Under sun or stars, day or night, we chat, calm, confident
Cradled in the touch, the strength of holding each other’s hands.
Cold mist off the ocean stings our arms, but we are warm, together
Then, as if by chance, we discover an open gate, stairs;
We slowly descend steps bowed by time and many feet,
Our calves ache, our knees creek, worn from long use.
At bottom, our pace quickens, no matter our past; we run.
We dash to time’s vast ocean, dark as distance, near as breath,
Alive with possibility, nascent, realized unimaginable, reality.
We dance on the strand, exuberant, smile, kiss, embrace, until
We merge, turn, dive into the depths, to find distant shores.
