Not in Truth

What are the many reasons
We tell ourselves each day?
The reasons which explain
How and why we live our lives.
Can we reconcile them with truth,
Intrinsic truth, not our own?
That which is true, despite
What we may think, despite
Anything we may believe.

For belief is only, ever that,
No matter how sure our faith.
I know this is true, even
Though you believe I am wrong.
I know I may be wrong, even
Though I believe belief is only
Our way of dealing with
A world, a universe so vast
It is beyond our comprehension.

But it is far more than that,
What you and I may believe.
What do you think they tell
Themselves, those people,
The ones at the top?
What reasons do the offer,
While screwing us over, and for what?
Do you think they even believe,
Not in truth, but in you and in me?
