Circle of Joy

Circle of Joy

                                                                                          Bird on a Wall ~ Philip Brent Harris

~~~~~
Beat the log, the tree,
Your head, looking
For sound and rhythm.
Imitate the birds,
The beasts you love
and fear.
Find another sound
To join voice and drum.
Hold tight the vine.
Pluck, drag the bone
Across the surface.
Find the one
That seems to know
How to shape the wood,
Bone, sinew, rock
To hold the sounds
That fill the world.
Will we ever hear
All, each one?
Some so near, far
They are unrecognizable;
Beyond our ability
To render in our
Current incarnation.
Still, we have spoken
Star to star, been
The ringing bells
Of spinning galaxies.
Neither more nor less
Than the symphonies
Of all atoms
The choirs of crickets,
The chanting of ants.
If we can but learn
To listen in a way
That will allow
Others to hear us
In a way we
Have never known
Or been before,
Able to assimilate
Into our being.
Though, of course,
It already exists
Within us and
Without us, in time
space, duration,
We spin together
And know we all
Part of all,
In this circle of joy.
