People Over Politics, World Over Wealth

The van, races down the road, heads into town.
It’s sleek, black. What does its presence mean?
This is a small town, has a church, a restaurant,
a Sheriff’s Office and a bank. What stores they
had boarded over? Except the feed store and
tractor sales, out where Main Street turns into
Valley Road. A long way from downtown. The
restaurant, more of a diner than anything any
would mistake for fancy. Darlene, the waitress,
serves coffee and breakfast, burgers, chicken-
fried steak at lunch, plus Coke, the cola dujour.
The van rumbles to a stop in front of the diner,
waiting for the one red traffic light. Idling while
the police cruiser crosses the street in front of it.
The cops give it a fierce look, but want breakfast
more than they want adventure. They park their
cruiser and watch the van, black tinted windows
blocking their view. The light changes. The cops
slowly exit the cruiser. The van slides smoothly
through the town’s major intersection, rolls away.
