People Over Politics, World Over Wealth

When will the universe reach out
to us and show us we are not the
only lives which exist in this vast
time of space. With more galaxies
of more stars than we can ever
see on the clearest night you can
imagine. How could we possibly
be the only beings who reached
the self-reflective creativity called
life, the brilliance we’ve produced
in our minor time upon our minor
planet. Have all the other species
proceeded us to the midden of lost
opportunities, trashed their worlds,
blown them to flinders, brightly
glowing nuclear char heaps needing
galactic removal. Has no one called
us because there is simply no living
being left to reach out and say hello,
to us, to offer us a helping hand?
