Our dreams drink coffee with us—Joy Harjo
Our dreams drink coffee with us as they put their arms around our children.
Even as they wrap us in a loving or hateful embrace, for our hopes, for our sins.
Come to the table sons and daughters, mothers and fathers,
aunts and uncles, nieces and nephews, friends and neighbors.
Spirits of the future watch us deal and play the cards of life’s poker game, the
craps we shoot, where a single cardboard token, dice roll affects everything.
Come to the table priests, preachers, pastors, ministers, rabbis,
popes, potentates, politicians, presidents, pundits and people.
Our lives are far more than fun and games, filled with winners and losers as well.
The games we play involve people and the winners may become losers as well.
Come to the table everyone around the world, every nation,
land and state, every strata, religion, belief or persuasion.
Come to the table of all starts, stops, dreams, nightmares, hopes and heartaches.
Our symbol of humanity, where we can not only declare war, but realize peace.
Come to the table in humility. Come to the table in supplication.
Come to the table. Come to the table. Come to the table.
