People Over Politics, World Over Wealth

We Are One

For my brother

The parade starts soon. People
line up upon the street. Children
get under feet. Then raised to
shoulders, holders of the best
seats in the house, despite the
lawn chairs carried from home.
Those who have waited longest
in the dark, camped in a nearby
park. Give them their due.
It’s not something I would do.

But, then again, I do not like
parades. Some big charades,
happy people, marching bands,
Many flags proclaim patriotism,
even in this time of stark division,
historical revision. Martial law
and maybe no elections. What
will it take before the blinders
fall, if they ever disappear at all.
Hopefully I will see a future free.
