People Over Politics, World Over Wealth

The club, dark and smokey
with pot and hash; cigarettes
de classe. Whiskey and gin
flow like the oasis fountains,
As there, the air filled with
foreign tongues all converse.
Tables are full, the bar stands
three deep. Men and women
drink beer and vodka. While
the lightning green of absinthe
shrieks on table tops; full stop.
Through the clamor of voices
and laughter, shouted orders,

late replies, the tension builds,
People wait for the chanteuse
to appear, grace the spotlight.
Her side musicians, Katee on
piano and Abel on saxophone,
cause a stir when they ascend.
There, they play softly, to and
for themselves alone. Then, the
drummer, Jeri, and Max on the
double bass join their partners.
The room grows silent, breaths
held long moments. The crowd
expects to soon hear Angelique.
