People Over Politics, World Over Wealth

Wind chimes collide in the distance,
full throated, rife with music, as if
a soft breeze sings. Just awakened,
you think it’s some tune on a radio.
Until you remember your neighbor
Judith’s recent purchase to celebrate
her freedom from that brutish man
she still loves. Though love is never,
can never warrant suffering, agony.
Slowly, she is healing. You wish her
well; don’t want her as your problem.
The loud click of your alarm, before
the radio comes on, says, get up and
go to work. You don’t think Mary is
home yet. Until you remember she
won’t return from the graveyard shift.
You scrub the heels of your hands in-
to your eyes, stretch, and flop back.
This feels like a day to call in sane.
Stay home and live. Swing your feet
out, stand. Perhaps, check on Judith.
It’s what Mary would urge you to do.
