Reversal of Fortune ~ Philip Brent Harris
Sitting on a bench by the library,
listening to a man in an electric wheelchair
Talking on the phone, much louder than
he needs to, as if everyone in the city wants
to hear him. I think the only one he’s listening to
is himself. Though he responds to someone,
a woman on the other end of the line. She laughs
Still, he only speaks to flap his gums,
Listening to his own brilliance and inanity.
I don’t know his world any more than anyone
else’s, since we can never truly know.
He doesn’t look the same, breathe the same,
perceive the same, no matter what we say.
Does he hate cats and spicy foods for dinner?
Maybe he smokes cigars and is afraid of dogs.
If we traded and then went back, what
would we retain? Would it change us?
