This is an older piece, but it never seems to go out of date.
And will the savage songs of war never end,
Replaced by simple, sweet songs of peace?
How can we, forever, our loved ones send,
Knowing they will feed the slavering beast?
Do we wonder why we never grow sane,
When the best, the brightest are sent to die?
Why choose blood, shed again and again?
Listen to war mongers tell the same lies?
No matter what language, time or place,
They exhort us, “to arms,” attack or defend,
No matter what words or look of the face,
We feed lust, power, greed. Don’t pretend.
The blood still as red, the death still as final;
Husbands, wives, daughters sons just cease.
Civilian, soldier, adult, child, big or small;
Dwell in need, recall; only dead find peace.
Cannot we refuse, avoid this horrid plight?
Are we stupid, crazy, witless or spineless?
Can we decide not to venture into that night;
While all people sing songs of their blessed?
And leaves turn orange, yellow, red in autumn.
Grass greens, blanketing the earth in the spring.
Seasons, each in turn, greet the new-rising sun.
Whether humans survive won’t matter a thing.
