What are the things we pushed down and bury deep inside?
Memories and feelings we hide. Is it more than this, I wonder/?
What about earlier intentions, hopes and dreams and prayers
all that we wanted to believe and life said not so fast, bub?
Some rebel, fight their way forward; others give up or give in
to societal pressure. Get a job. a home, a spouse, children.
Maybe these are on the list, yet life is capricious. It may move on
apace, carry as along or not. Sometimes it spits us out, intuiting
we haven’t learned enough to swim in such waters. What of others
who swim around us, push or pull us down, swim away? The too
fortunate? The damaged, homeless, disenfranchised reaching for
those struggling in between? Clutching tightly and risking all.
Even those who reached land, climbed upon hills return in time.
Most tread water, help others find a brief respite, avoid the rapids.
Still, we are all life tossed and tumbled, sink or swim. Struggle or
give in before we arrive at or return from the near or distant shore.
