People Over Politics, World Over Wealth!

The Quest ~ Philip Brent Harris

How many lives have already passed
buried, burned, dumped into the sea?
Will their bones or ashes even matter?
Their flesh consumed, returned earth.
Smoke from their cremation drifts up
marking the sky in meaning, portent.
Waste returned in rain feeds oceans.
Yet does their bulk add to ocean rise
their soot befoul our darkening skies?

Will our art, writing, speaking help?
Our attempts to reach other people.
All the same, despite skewed views.
Every culture has created to capture
moments in time, proof they existed.
Am I seen in my captured moments?
My needs for beauty and tenderness.
All my weaknesses and my strengths.
Do my creations sunder beneath life?

What is my mythology, basic tenets
which underpin my being, existence?
Will anyone discover it or is it buried
so deeply that archaeologists frown.
What myriad demons of my creation
do I battle to protect my secret self?
Will my secret grow until it fills me?
Is my art and writing where it leaks
until I will see it, realize it’s only me?
