Sunlight slants through the forest
Painting some trunks high, low and
in between. Some shine brightly, as if
they stand, sway, basking in in a spotlight.
Some barely glow, reflected, not bright.
The colors change, yellow, red, orange,
alter green to green, golden in shadow, grays
Yet there’s nothing that recalls the old ways.
Not that they are gone, but few remember now.
Is what we have gained worth what we have lost?
