Family gatherings and celebrations,
those personal, secular, and religious
moments many now no longer await.
They’ll be remembered and honored.
Not in the same way, the same place.
When the specter of love occupies an
empty chair in another missing room.
What if one person, the emotional glue
that held your time together, together
is gone, a table donated, a house sold?
Even if all stays where it was, a space
can feel so empty with only one gone.
So empty, you hear the echoes of past
gatherings and you miss them despite
Some old pain and acrimony; it’s not
available. We would relish rancorous
days to gain just a few more moments.
O, to see their smile, hear their laugh,
Watch them bait you, needle you, till
you would strangle them where they
stand, though it will not change them.
They are gone beyond your measure.
Each will be in time, yet, this instant
and those yet to come number more
than you can encompass in thoughts.
Traditions matter both less and more.
In our time filled with strife, disease
hatred, fear, what will ours become?
Peace is Purpose, Nonviolence is Strength,
Diversity is Unity, Empathy is Empowerment
Unite the World!
