Child is Father to the Man ~ Philip Brent Harris

What are the mysteries?
If anything
can thus be called.
Life itself
is mystery enough,
at least to me.

Listen to the voices
of winds and waters,
stones and trees.
Mountain, sea, and sky.
Life much older
then thee or me.

Yet, we do not
listen. Not any more.
Once we may have,
may have been able
to hear, though
I cannot say sure.

Still, our dominant
faith in the West,
seems to speak
against it.
Deny it outright.
The way I read it.

First, they blame
the woman,
they blame the snake.
When it’s the trees
Who grow the knowledge
We are forbidden.

What god would
forbid knowledge
which may, in time,
lead to wisdom?
What is worse,
punish us, our source.

Exile beings
of their creation.
Set a test, a trap
omniscience knows
we will fail
before our creation.

Here, perhaps, we find
the genesis of our fear,
and of our belligerence.
A creator so insane
they demand
absolute obedience.

Sent into wilderness
knowing death awaits.
Worse, the fear
of what comes next
unless we kiss
the creator’s feet or ass.

Left us with con men,
tricksters who distorted
this into angel choirs
singing constant praise.
It’s enough
to make me sick.

We are offered
the gilded carrot or
the burning stick.
Screw up, even once,
spend all eternity
roasting in flame.

Raked over the coals
because of a flaw
inherent in our creation.
If we failed
the first test,
we surely fail the final.

Or is simply saying
sorry enough
to get a pity ‘C’?
To wonder, wherever
we end up,
what went wrong.
