We Must Take This Time

Night Encroaches ~ Philip Brent Harris

We must take this time and the lesson of our current government as everything we should not do to help people of all backgrounds, races, religions or none, all genders, sexual orientations and any other difference or to advance democracy. The administration of President Trump has been a chilling wakeup call. His base and venal actions and his crooks and con artists have corrupted the ethics of the office, undermined our educational system, gutted our justice department, fired career diplomats, orchestrated the dismantling of the Post Office, exacerbated our destruction of the climate and the protection of national parks and monuments. He has insulted our allies and praised despotic and repressive leaders around the world, who murder their own populations, imprisoning political foes or making them vanish, with no information about where the are, dead or alive. His regime has slandered immigrants and people of color as terrorists, criminals, rapists, coming from “shithole countries.” His regime separated parents and children, as a way to discourage refugees who walked, in some cases, 1000’s of miles.

His regime has encouraged racism and misogyny, attacking any strong woman who dared to disagree with him, accused him of sexual harassment, ask him difficult questions (speaking truth to power) and pointed out and documented his lies and campaigns of misinformation and obfuscation. It has dismissed mass shootings with thoughts and prayers, vilified our free press, deployed American troops to harass American citizens protesting peacefully. It has aided its wealthy donors and cronies with massive tax breaks and bailouts, virtually ignoring those most in need. And all in the name of personal enrichment, power, and dreams of becoming a dictator.

I could continue, likely for pages, saying it, though most of us understand Trump and his appointed and elected toadies are the result of years of the Republican Party being co-opted  by unscrupulous people. These people enrich themselves and hope to return our country to a mythical time of milk and honey, when power was in the hands of white America, including segregation, anti-Semitism, pro-Evangelical and women in the kitchen, birthing babies and supporting their man. Result or no, Trump has been their dream of destruction by the people he has appointed, the stands he has taken, and the damage he has done to our standing in the world. He mismanaged a pandemic, convincing followers it was a hoax, a media stunt, a plot by his enemies. He suggested ingesting disinfectant, a bizarre light therapy and repeatedly promoted Hydroxychloroquine as a cure for COVID 19. He took no responsibility, blamed others and showed no leadership, which led to over 5.5 million cases and over 170 thousand deaths in the United States alone as I type these words. As a result, we have massive unemployment and uncertainty about our future. Nothing is his fault; he never takes responsibility for anything, while often taking credit for things he hasn’t done. While his  lickspittles and supporters turn a blind eye. Some, such as Mitch McConnell, Steven Miller and others who have been and will be arrested and prosecuted, are evil, supporting programs which enrich them, fully aware they damaged the people of our country and the ideals on which it was founded.

When we live up to our ideals, we strive to be our best selves. We have been living through one of the darkest times we have so-far faced as a nation. If we choose to change, to shine a light on the best in us and on dark, destructive segments of our history and population, we’ll transform ourselves and our nation. If we choose, we’ll begin a dialog to explore the hatred and history of exploitation of people we kidnapped from their homes and families, enslaving them. The genocide of an indigenous people who stood in our way, when we decided this land and its resources should be ours.

If we choose, we‘ll rebuild our nation, our bridges and roads and the infrastructure we need to carry us forward. We’ll create jobs, opportunities through this and developing green technology, which will free us of energy dependence on anyone but ourselves. We will invest in the arts, schools, paying teachers a wage equal to the task they perform, and the supplies and support they need in their classrooms. We will invest in research across the board, medicine, energy, new technology, exploration and fields as yet undreamed. We will tax the wealthy and their businesses a reasonable amount, cut our military spending and, by investing it, become a nation that other nations will need to catch to compete. They will not need to compete. As we say about our current pandemic, we are all in this together. We all need to begin acting like it.
