Target Practice ~ Philip Brent Harris
~~~~~
Boots on the ground come marching, marching.
Boots on the ground come marching one by one.
Boots on the ground taught to appear steely eyed,
While they wield the arsenal that’s been supplied.
Boots on the ground come marching, marching.
Boots on the ground come marching two by two.
There to support law enforcement; can it be true?
Clearly, that should in no way alarm me or you.
Boots on the ground come marching, marching.
Boots on the ground come marching five by five.
Flash-bangs, teargas, rubber bullets they deploy
Upon innocent protesters for a photo op; no joy.
Boots on the ground come marching, marching.
Boots on the ground come marching ten by ten
And, I hear you say, “Oh no, here we go again.”
Following orders, these armed women and men.
Boots on the ground come marching, marching.
Boots on the ground come marching, a company
It’s not what you think; it’s ever so much worse.
Policing the interests of misers; I want to curse.
Boots on the ground come marching, marching.
Boots on the ground come marching, a battalion.
These are people, just like them that they attack.
People who’ll remember them; don’t look back.
Boots on the ground always come filled with feet
Bodies, like attacked civilians filling our streets.
Are they so far gone they cannot see themselves,
Convinced they must be attacking someone else.
When our future hope, our sons and daughters,
Brainwashed so they can contemplate slaughter,
Good people, our own people or anyone in truth;
We sacrifice the promise of children, our youth.
We shatter the hope of a dream we thought real.
The equality of all people, its promised appeal.
I think our ideal more shallow than we thought.
I hope we survive what those old misers bought.
