The Memory of Fire

What does the fire remember,
about when it helped,
when it harmed? No distinction,
started from flame or ember,
only we ignore its danger,
when we know
we should be alarmed.
Is the fire wiser
than we will ever be?
Knowing the world needs
fire’s destruction
to engender new life.
We use searing heat to
create our glass and pottery.
Scorched earth can create
both new growth and strife.
Not belieing the grief
of destruction and loss,
to say we are foolish
in decisions we make.
Though we may tame fire,
fire will always be boss.
Still, life grows anywhere,
any chance it will take.
