Lost in Thought ~ Philip Brent Harris

The drama of the storm, as watched
safely, behind glass, from a distance.
Wind marks its approach. Lightning
flashes, a crack of thunder soon after.
Rain starts to fall, pounding on the
roof and on our thoughts, mysteries.
Knocking on a door held firmly shut.
The rain slackens after a slight time.
Too late now, the door is opened, if
only a crack. We push it wider, enter,
believing we know what awaits us.
Indeed, what we expect holds true,
but the rooms of memory are altered.
Moments, objects we recall far apart
may have shifted, are closer together.
Ones remembered together shun each
other, backs turned, at distant ends of
a room or long corridor. We find this
jarring, yet as we walk the hallways
of our memories, we gradually notice
views that appear, offer new clarity.
There will be a time, we thought we
knew all the answers, but no longer.
Our past has not changed, we have.
