Not a Miracle

Above the Clouds ~ Philip Brent Harris

I stroke paint onto canvas in wild arcs

Call to mind a summer day, winter storm.

Makes me think of a long-ago Christmas,

Acted as an acolyte for a Midnight Mass.

I still believed, had not begun to question.

A long New England winter without snow

Deep into the frigid tail of late December.

The candles snuffed, and no cross to bear,

Escaped, slipped out through the sacristy.

Outside, I witnessed a wonderland of awe.

Fat, fluffy flakes of stardust drifted down.

Roundabout me, diamond glitter reigned,

Crowning midnight’s silent, regal magic.

It’s ermine robe blinding the night above.

Not a miracle; an instant, instantly recalled.
