Chance I Will Be Wrong

Seeking Safe Harbor

Seeking Safe Harbor ~ Philip Brent Harris

~~~~~
Words cascade down the page.
Cataracts I must navigate as I
learn what and where the many
perils lurk beneath the surface
of my wandering, weary mind.
Sounds insane, but such is the
stream which carries me along.
Sometimes, I float gently, lulled
by a false sense of safety again.
Stolen from me in short steps
sudden drops and jagged stones.
Over the falls before I’m ready.
My mysterious muse handling
the tiller, guiding my journey.
Like the best guides, he ensures
my travels are thrilling, aware
of chutes and sudden drop offs.
Laughing into what will come.
Wait, my muse stands on shore,
Still laughing through the mist.
Is her hand still on the tiller, the
current she fights not too strong?
Until the surface of my journey
widens, slows, and I float along.
Unnerved by floating oars and
swollen detritus of trips before.
Is there a hand visible, a head
which bobs above the surface?
Can such a sighting be true or
only my fears of what I’ll face?
If my fear, must I still choose
to help, chance I will be wrong?
