Another date that lives in infamy
Because it marks the base murder
Of 19 grade-school children and
Of two teachers and one husband.
I tried to think of a gentler name
For murder. Ended is euphemism.
But it is not inaccurate, only weak.
An 18-year-old boy shattered life,
broke hearts and crushed all hope
These families will ever feel whole.
Although they will or may hopefully
learn to function without the stolen
piece of themselves, including the
the foul assassin’s kith and kin.
All the false sympathy, words, attitudes
And platitudes should lodge in the
speaker’s throat, crammed sideways.
Though I do not believe, may they
Roast in fiery pits of hell forever.
Would my words have more impact
If they were only a list of dates?
Where would I start to list them all?
I might find or select a beginning,
But today there is no ending, and
The names, oh so very many names,
Who died brutal, senseless deaths,
Would follow one after another and
Would continue for all eternity, unless
We all choose finally to say. “No more.”
