They Failed to Act

~~~~~
They spend their money to conceal their shame.
Not in the dirt, but beneath piles of filthy lucre.
They pretend to think and pray, as they prey on
The souls of youth, offering no hope or succor.
They’ll frown, rapidly don their mask to glower.
Wring their hands, and deposit our grief in the
Reliquary of their callous, stony-hearted deceit.
Washing their gelt in the blood of our children;
Standing to profess, they don’t have the power.
They are useless and feckless, more each hour.
They cannot change a tragedy that’s happened
And they truly won’t mind if it happens again.
They will gain votes from their ravenous crowd,
Who believe they have been wronged, signing
Their rage and fear through the blaze of a gun.
The sower of death that in a matter of moments
Tips a fulcrum of change to a future of torment
When they left for work, school, shopping, as
They kissed their darlings for what became the
Last time their lips were warm, hearts beating.
I doubt our leaders have troubled sleep, despite
Which faith they claim or proffer, no matter the
Days or hours they first believed they believed.
In our land, armed white men believe they own,
Built upon the backs of stolen people, that are
Victims in inordinate numbers based upon skin
colors, languages, who they’d love, that they’re
Choosing to control their bodies. Venal officials,
assure children, women, and men get murdered
because they’ve failed to act when they should.
