Bang Zoom ~ Philip Brent Harris

I’ve hitchhiked across the United States
three times. Twice alone and once with
my love. So many tales I could tell you.
I’ll confine myself to my teenage years
When I lived in a town outside Boston.
I hitched every morning to high school.
Route 20 crossed the end of my block
and led upstreet in one direction and to
towns west, if you went the other way.

I had my dreams of James’s Taylor’s
Berkshires with a dusting of frosting.
His road that led to Stockbridge, the
city being home to perennial favorite
Arlo’s Alice’s Restaurant Massacree.
Yet, I digress, at least a small degree.
I say small, because the song and this
screed are meant to be about trusting,
not only the system, but also people.

I was still a smoker then and smoked
with a lighted cigarette whenever I got
picked up both going or coming home.
No one was bothered back in the day.
If they were, that wouldn’t be my ride.
Sadly, that lit cigarette was a weapon.
If someone got strange or a man made
a pass that glowing coal loomed large.
Suddenly, the next left turn was theirs.
