Another Dog and Pony Show ~ Philip Brent Harris

I must first say, I don’t believe in either heaven or hell,
Not in the way that I’ve implied in my title above, still,
The framework under which our current lives are lived
A sundered screen through which our lives are sieved.

Help us to never wonder how we might’ve lived so well,
If we hadn’t told children how to rape, maim and kill.
Before we proclaim our innocence, we must daily give
Thoughts to each who we refuse to forget or to forgive.

I would rather try to learn from mistakes we’ve made
Accepting where we are, where our truth we mislaid.
Although we want change, most now can’t see a way;
Too well we’ve learned to come and to sit and to stay.

Marching in ordered rows I wonder the price we paid
And that many can’t perceive how we’ve been played
We hate who’re told by religion and leaders each day.
While the children and fools remind us; we must play.
