Diamond in the Rough ~ Philip Brent Harris (Private Collection)
~~~~~
I cannot scream the pain and terror
Of men being murdered in the streets.
I cannot howl the anguish of mothers
Whose daughters die because of hate.
I will never know the look of children
Whose mothers and fathers are gone
Too soon; none can truly explain why.
I cannot imagine the need for the talk,
The reminder that life’s stacked against
Me, simply because of who I was born.
I cannot imagine what it’s like living,
While Black, Hispanic, Indigenous,
Latinx, a Woman, Transgender, Other.
I simply cannot know or feel the reason.
The reason of unreason, hate of love.
This life, I cannot inhabit other lives,
Yet, I feel the anger for their suffering
I cry the tears of their pain, sorrow.
I understand I am not equal to the task
Of changing the world to be better.
I am but one small voice, saying I care.
